Finding Gold Near Old Mines

Since gold is so heavy it settled in areas with water drainage or mostly where water traveled. The old timer miners knew this and this is where they would focus most their work. Old time miners were smart and good at finding gold but were limited due to their lack of technology.

This is why many people that use metal detectors today are still successful. The old timers worked hard and found their share of gold but they also left a lot behind. Whenever you are around old gold mines remember to check their old tailing (left over piles of dirt and rocks that have been processed).

Since their equipments would miss so much gold you can still find some here today. Unfortunately these old mines attract a lot of people, and where there are people there is trash. Chances are you will find you fair share of metal garbage around these areas, hopefully you also find some gold!

Gold Prospecting in the USA

When most people think of gold mining they perhaps think of the old 49ers panning for gold in a river. This method is timeless and is still practiced today all around the world. With the knowledge that gold is much heavier than water they are able to pan it right out of the ground.

Most mining done 100 years ago and most mining done today is what is called placer gold mining. Placer gold is gold that can be found as a nugget or smaller flakes. This placer gold is easier to recover than mining hard rock for ore.

Gold was a tricky thing years ago and still is today. Most gold miners even during the gold rush left empty handed. One person could be finding thousands of dollars worth of gold, while another sat ten feet away and found nothing. This caused jealousy and is why the west was so lawless.

Around the 1970's US Geologists were sent to remote parts of the USA to preform mineral deposit tests and to find areas that contained a lot of gold. This is why most gold has been discovered or at least most gold producing areas in the US have been identified.

If you are interested in finding gold it is still out there! With some hard work and research you can find some for yourself!
